Eco-Friendly Papyrus: Meditation Cushions

Kushal’s
papyrus
meditation cushions are hand-woven in a workshop that aims to
empower
women and alleviate rural poverty using nature's
bio-diversity. They
promote Nepali culture by blending contemporary
and traditional design,
creating exciting new products from natural,
renewable resources. The
fiber undergoes a special eco-friendly
treatment to ensure that it is
long-lasting.
In Nawalparsi and
Lumbini, farmers plant papyrus on
otherwise fallow land. They are paid
directly and immediately for their
harvest—plus the papyrus
grows abundantly and is a sustainable
resource.

In Kathmandu,
women are employed to weave the cushions
by hand and are provided with
training, a base salary plus production
bonus, a retirement fund, paid
annual holidays, and can even bring their
children to work with them
when they need to. The pioneering founder of
this workshop has helped
establish a women’s economic network in
Kathmandu and is
dedicated to creating employment and independence for
socially and
economically deprived women.
