About ethicL

What Is ethicL?

ethicL is a website for people and organizations to buy and sell products.

Why Is ethicL Different?

Products sold on ethicL support causes that help the earth and her inhabitants. It's about more than buying and selling products, but buying and selling products in a conscious effort to help others. Read more about buying green.

The Core of ethicL: Creating Vectors of Change

With every purchase you make on ethicL, you are in some way giving back to the world at large. You become a vector of change for the causes close to your heart. Maybe you've faced oppression, discrimination, the effects of pollution, a poor educational system, illness, isolation and a lack of opportunity.

ethicL helps everyday consumers like you fight for these causes, build a better future for you and your fellow citizen, and protect the planet we all share.

What Does it Mean to Buy Green?

Buying green is akin to casting a vote . . . you align your spending power with your beliefs, values and intentions.

The Birth of Buying Green

The rise of earth-friendly products and an increasing awareness of the values associated with the production of them have created a generation of ethical consumers.

Hence, the birth of buying green . . . what we call the social justice movement of the 21st century.

"We need to create one-planet livelihoods, a new model of sustainable prosperity, and we need to do it within our lifetimes. For the future is bright, but it must also be green."
Adam Steffen, Founder, Worldchanging.org

ethicL Promotes Buying Green

ethicL promotes buying green in three ways:

buy giving consumers an outlet to buy earth-friendly products (the green buyer);

by giving ethical sellers a forum in which to sell (the green seller); and

by introducing consumers to new products and causes (the social justice movement).

The Green Buyer

Buying green has given rise to grassroots movements that tackle environmental, social and economic causes. Green consumers recognize that every individual impacts the planet.

For example, they know that eating fruit from a local producer saves energy, that drinking fair-trade coffee supports communities where adults can earn a livable wage, and that using non-toxic products has a meaningful impact on the earth's ecology.

Many consumers go to great efforts to seek out these types of products. ethicL brings a whole marketplace to them, in addition to providing information about new causes and ways to help the earth and her citizens.

The Green Seller

Across the globe are people and companies who make and sell products that are in some way good for the planet.

These products may be eco-friendly, non-toxic, recyclable or charity driven.

Many retailers focus solely on the attributes of a given product, communicating only how the product benefits the buyer. ethicL's marketplace allows the consumer to make the social justice leap from individual consumption to how a purchase helps others and the planet.

Hence the birth of the social justice movements of the 21st century: ethical consumerism.

Buy Green: The Social Justice Movement of the 21st Century

Consumers who are ethically aware shop more consciously. They want to know about new products and causes they can support. ethicL introduces green consumers to new causes and processes that add value to the lives of others and to the planet.

Every product and store on ethicL has tags related to the cause(s) it supports. Buyers are introduced to the missions and values of the seller and their product, making it easy for them to decide if it's a cause they want to champion.

To join this social justice movement of the 21st century, explore seller profiles and read about the products and causes they support.

Remember, when you buy ethicL, you buy green.

The ethicL Team

Jennifer Johnson

Founder

Jennifer started ethicL in 2008. She lives in New York City and is a mom to twin sons who were born prematurely. Enduring two years of motherhood to children who suffered from severe reflux, Jennifer went on a frantic search for reasons why - and for safe foods. Jennifer's quest led to a host of independent food retailers and vendors outside the mainstream. One day, upon attending a Natural Products Expo, Jennifer spotted thousands of products launched by hundreds of small value-driven companies. Seeing firsthand that this independent-minded culture from years gone by still existed, she realized that she didn't know of a marketplace on the net where these sellers could sell in a united community. Thinking that small companies like the ones at the Natural Products Expo would benefit most by selling to equally passionate customers are looking for green products, the idea for ethicL began to form. Jennifer is an entrepreneur (WebPersonals, now LavaLife and LesConcierges ), internet business developer (Live365) and investment banker (Merrill Lynch and UBS ). Her online dating site was the web's first. It was hugely popular because it filled a real need. She is drawn to web companies that are about real improvements to life, not mere marketing gimmicks or passing fads. ethicL has many parallels WebPersonals. It helps green sellers and green buyers form a marketplace where they can buy and sell based on their values, rather than purely on their wallet. Jennifer says "ethicL is my gift not only to my children, but to the world they will inherit. I hope you'll join me and the ethicL team in this social justice movement of the 21st century: going green."

Jennifer has an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BS from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
